It is no longer the smaller half of the world&#8217;s seafood supply. In 2022, for the first time on record, farmed aquatic animal production reached 94.4 million tonnes and overtook wild capture (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fao.org\/newsroom\/detail\/fao-report-global-fisheries-and-aquaculture-production-reaches-a-new-record-high\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">FAO<\/a>, 2024).<\/p>\n<p>Three terms crowd around it and get used loosely. <strong>Fish farming<\/strong> is the finfish subset of aquaculture, so an oyster longline or a seaweed raft is aquaculture but not fish farming. <strong>Wild capture<\/strong> is the other half of the industry: harvesting wild stocks rather than farming them. <strong>Aquaponics<\/strong> is a separate, coupled loop of fish tanks and plant beds. The systems below are where those species actually live.<\/p>\n\n<h2>The Production-System Axis: Six Systems in Real Use<\/h2>\n<p>This is the axis with operational teeth, which is why official classifications always include it (<a href=\"https:\/\/marinewaters.fish.wa.gov.au\/resource\/fact-sheet-how-does-aquaculture-work\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Government of Western Australia<\/a>). The system decides how water is supplied, how waste leaves, what a storm does to you, and what you spend capital on. Six systems cover nearly everything in commercial use.<\/p>\n\n<h3>Ponds<\/h3>\n<p>Earthen basins where natural productivity, boosted by fertilisation and supplemental feed, grows the crop. Tilapia, carp, and shrimp are the classics, and a pond can run extensive or push toward intensive. The boundary is water arithmetic. Seasonal flow drops and discharge limits both bite.<\/p>\n\n<h3>Tanks and RAS<\/h3>\n<p>Indoor tanks, with RAS (recirculating aquaculture systems) closing the loop through drum filtration, biofiltration, oxygenation, and UV or ozone treatment.
